Episode Thirty Two: Blind and Lame Poetry Slizaam

May 5, 2005 - 2:44pm

Hosts: Nicco Mele, Emily Thorson, David Cohen

A late tribute to National Poetry Month. Hear Nicco reading a number of his favourite poems. Emily read "This Happened" by C.K. Williams. David read two poems. The first was a love poem written by President George W. Bush to Laura in Oct. of 2003 while she was on a trip to Europe. The second is a W.H. Auden poem titled September 1, 1939. The poem speaks about the ills of political man; democratic leaders and dictators alike spend there lives speaking rubbish about building great and selfish societies. Auden praises the wisdom of simple humanism for it is all that we have to combat the fierce forces of political man. September 1, 1939 is not a happy poem, but it is one filled with hope.
